Some people may wonder what you need a cédula FOR. It’s the national ID card, and follows you around a little like your Social Security number, but even more so. It comes in the form of a photo ID with a ten-digit number; a stiff plastic card containing a computer chip in its latest form. It’s not nearly as expensive as a visa, but can be a little complicated when the rules change during the application process, which they often do. (A previous ID called a "censo" is no longer in use.)

Some of the uses of a cédula:

--If you are 65 and over, to request a refund of the 12% IVA (VAT) tax you pay on many purchases

--Significant travel discounts for those 65+

--To establish utility accounts, such as electrical or telephone

--To open a bank account, though you’ll need other documents too

--To use a credit card, at those places where they are accepted

I’m sure I’m missing some. Feel free to add to the list.

I have heard upon reentering the country, they want to see a ceduala and your passport and I have heard the opposite. I read one post that they let the person enter but frowned and said, “don’t let it happen again”. In keeping with our original intent on this site with facts, I do not know any of these people, so if anyone has a recent experience it would be appreciated if you would share.

And I remembered one additional cédula use. It allows you to vote in Ecuadorian elections.

Question – my wife and I have accumulated a pile of receipts/facturas and wonder who in the Cotacachi community helps get those in shape and completes any other paperwork to file? Also where does one take the materials to be processed? Thanks, Ken Merwin

I've heard good recommendations for the wife of Christian, who runs Multisoluciones on 9 de Octubre. She's an accountant--I'm sorry that I don't know her name. I've been thinking of visiting her myself on this very topic.

Anyone else?

I am 67 and I live in Cuenca. The Cedula is required for a bus pass that allows me to use the bus for 12 cents. Admission to the movies for half price. Discounted admission to the city pool and the hot baths at Duran Hostel. The cedula is also required to hook up to an Internet service.

Also I receive all of my IVA refunded (up to $130 per month) having a cedula.

Re: Airfare. Varies from airline to airline. but the Cedula and being over 65 gets me a discount with flights originating in Ecuador.

I have a friend and she does her own and says it is quite simply. When we return in August I plan to get her to walk me through the first one—--I mean walk my wife through it.Laugh
